Transforming Your Products into Compelling Sales Tools

Kelly & Barratt: A Rich History in Samples Manufacturing

Established in 1905, Kelly & Barratt has a long and storied history in the world of samples manufacturing. The company began as a small commercial printing business, founded by Kelly and later joined by Barratt in the years between the wars. In 1932, the two partners established a limited company, which would go on to become a leader in the industry.

In 1967, the company was purchased by James Cardno, a former chief accountant at printers John Waddintons. Cardno brought with him Colin Harris, who would later become managing director at K&B. The company continued to grow and evolve, with the addition of John Ellis as a director in 1970. When Harris retired in 1984, Ellis became the managing director, a position he held until his own retirement in 2008. Paul Ellis, John's son, joined the company in 1999 and remains in charge of the business to this day.

Trade and Custom Services

In its early years, Kelly & Barratt derived its income from commercial printing, serving the rag trade in and around Leeds. During World War II, the company was involved in the assembly of war kit. After the war, the company manufactured pattern sample books for the rag trade, a business that remained strong until the virtual collapse of the industry in the early 1970s. With the decline of the rag trade, the company shifted its focus to carpet flooring shade cards and swatches, print finishing, vinyl samples, and design boards, which remain the main sources of income to this day.
